Trauma Informed Substance Use Nursing Curriculum

What is this?

Trauma-informed healthcare is a model of care that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma on patients, families, and healthcare staff; recognizes how trauma can influence physical and mental health, behaviors, and overall well-being; and responds by embedding this awareness into clinical practices, organizational culture, and policies to improve patient outcomes and support provider resilience.

An essential component of trauma-informed care is recognizing the strong correlation between trauma and substance use disorder (SUD). Many individuals with SUD have experienced trauma, and substance use can be both a coping mechanism and a source of further trauma. Therefore, understanding the relationship between trauma and SUD is critical to providing compassionate, nonjudgmental, and effective care.

Our team developed course materials to help nursing faculty integrate trauma-informed healthcare and substance use disorder education across undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula.

Who is this for?

These trainings are designed for nursing faculty involved in teaching and curriculum development, practicing nurses, and nursing students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is specifically tailored to help learners understand and apply trauma-informed principles in the context of SUD. The training emphasizes the intersection of trauma and SUD, aiming to foster compassionate, patient-centered care and support nurse resilience. Faculty participants also gain strategies for creating safe, supportive learning environments when teaching sensitive topics related to trauma and addiction.
